About Big Spoon Co.

More Than 10 Years in the Making

Big Spoon Co. was officially registered in Virginia in 2016, but our story started before the Big Spoon name.

Design By E, founded by Enrique Mendez in 2014, was already helping businesses build brands, websites and creative campaigns throughout Virginia. Big Spoon later acquired Design By E, bringing the two companies together under one agency and combining years of creative experience, client relationships and complementary expertise.

Big Spoon's early history was also shaped by the longtime collaboration between Enrique and Kevin Clay. Friends since college, the two worked alongside one another on creative and community projects for years before eventually becoming business partners. Kevin became a recognizable part of the Big Spoon story, while Enrique brought the creative foundation and experience developed through Design By E. That partnership is an important chapter in the agency's history, but the experience behind Big Spoon has always been bigger than any one person.

That's why we say 10+ years. The Big Spoon name dates to 2016, but the work behind it goes back even further.

Today, Big Spoon builds on that combined history as a full-service agency with deep roots in Virginia, team presence based out of South Florida and clients throughout the East Coast, across the country and internationally.

Different Perspectives Make Better Work

We believe one of the best ways to understand people is to have a team that doesn't all come from the same place or see the world the same way.

Big Spoon is an LGBTBE-certified business with a diverse team, much of it made up of people from historically underrepresented backgrounds. Our leadership brings an international, bilingual perspective while still being deeply connected to Virginia, the East Coast and the communities where we work.

That combination has made us comfortable moving between very different worlds. We can work with a family-owned business one day, a government organization the next, and a national or international brand after that. We understand that every audience has its own language, culture, expectations and personality.

And that's important because we don't want our clients to sound like Big Spoon. We want them to sound like themselves.

Our job is to become a little bit of a chameleon. We learn your voice, understand your audience and figure out what makes your business different. Then we become the loudspeaker, helping that story reach more people through strategy, design, words, photography, video and digital experiences.

We're probably not the right agency for everyone, and we're okay with that. We do our best work with clients who value collaboration, creativity, good ideas and a team that's willing to solve problems rather than simply check boxes.

Our Beliefs

Your Voice, Louder.

The strongest brands feel authentic. We learn how you communicate and amplify it rather than replacing it with an agency voice.

Creativity Should Solve Something.

We love beautiful work, but beautiful isn't enough. Whether we're designing a website, building a campaign or solving an unexpected problem, creativity should have a purpose.

Different Perspectives Make the Work Better.

Our varied backgrounds help us ask better questions, understand different audiences and avoid one-size-fits-all marketing.

Big Spoon has always believed that business can be about more than profit. Our work with nonprofits, chambers, community organizations, local businesses and mission-driven projects has shaped the way we approach every client relationship. When our clients succeed, the communities around them often benefit too.

Care Is Part of the Job.

Marketing rarely happens in perfect conditions. Budgets change. Industries change. Technology changes. Problems show up that weren't in the proposal. We bring together strategy, creativity and a broad range of capabilities to find the smartest way forward.

Figure It Out.
